Social Media Verification

Social Media Verification

Pairs is one of Japan's largest matchmaking and dating apps.

I designed and continuously improved the verification badge system from the initial launch, ensuring high-profile users can safely engage with the platform.

Problem

Problem

Many people with high-visibility roles in their careers or on social media hesitated to use Pairs due to privacy concerns like identity leaks or impersonation, which kept them from safely finding serious relationships.

While Pairs' existing identity verification confirms a user is real, it doesn't verify their social media presence. To build trust for users with unique or unconventional professions, we needed a separate verification method based on their active social media history.

Trusted by design

Trusted by design

I designed a verified badge icon for high-profile users and explored various design patterns for its application.

We had to balance a tricky constraint: the design needed to make users feel special enough to send a 'like,' without making them seem overly favored. I explored various approaches to find that perfect sweet spot.

At the same time, we allowed verified users to toggle the blur on their profile photos at any time. This reduces the anxiety of being seen while giving them full control over their privacy.

Motion as a signal

Motion as a signal

When designing the profile for verified users, I realized that simply adding a badge wasn't enough to distinguish them from unverified users or capture enough attention.

To naturally convey their high profile, I explored multiple animation styles to create a motion effect that commands attention regardless of the blur level.

Designing the flow

Designing the flow

The application process involves several steps, including identity verification and linking social media accounts. I carefully designed the copy and layout for each screen to ensure users intuitively understand why this information is required.

Telling the story

Telling the story

Alongside the feature-focused landing page, I created a development story page to explain the background and purpose behind the celebrity verification feature.

To build empathy for the feature and encourage users to apply, I worked closely with stakeholders to refine the content throughout the process.

To drive awareness for our celebrity verification feature, I also designed various marketing assets, including App Store In-App Event cards, CRM banners, and press release thumbnails.
